Principal of Am/Pannalgama Vidyalaya in Ampara Granted Police Bail (DAMANA POLICE STATION) After Brutally Assaulting a Student, Causing Hearing Impairment

In February 2022, the principal of Pannalgama Vidyalaya in Ampara allegedly assaulted a student preparing for the G.C.E. O/L exam, resulting in hearing impairment and other serious health issues. The student was discharged from Ampara Hospital within a day, despite clear symptoms of trauma, and later required a week of inpatient care at Batticaloa Hospital.

NO FACTS REPORTED TO COURTS until the intervention of UHRO . Complaints were filed with NCPA, the National Child Protection Authority CC/22/02/487 and the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka HRCSL by UHRO. It is sad that both institutions failed to take effective action.

UHRO officials were present representing the victim child on 29/12/2022 in Ampara HRCSL office @ inquiry. The Human Rights Commission eventually closed the case, citing ongoing legal proceedings though our complaint to HRCSL was regarding the violation of fundamental rights that occurred during the preliminary judicial process.

As a result of the abuse, the victimized student has stopped schooling. UHRO legal and counselling interventions are ongoing.
